M&T Bank Sponsors Anti-Bullying seminars at each American Paradigm School

M&T Bank sponsored Rachel’s Challenge to inspire students to make their school a safer, more connected place

M&T Bankintroduced interactive workshops from Rachel’s Challenge focused on classroom kindness and promoting a healthy, safe, and fun learning environment for students enrolled with American Paradigm Schools (First Philadelphia, Memphis Street Academy, Tacony Academy and Lindley Academy). The siminars ran from January 8-January 16, 2018.

Students at each school were challenged to bring kindness into the classroom this New Year by participating in the bank-sponsored presentation. Rachel’s Challenge’s age-appropriate assemblies are designed to stimulate academic achievement and connections between students, faculty, and staff. This was the first of several student-focused assemblies to promote kindness and healthy, safe, and fun learning environments.

The assemblies highlight the story of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School Tragedy, focusing on her story of hope and acts of simple kindness. Each year, Rachel’s Challenge shares Rachel’s story with over a thousand schools and millions of students to turn the Columbine tragedy into a chain of good works, reduction in bullying, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

In addition to the age-appropriate assemblies from Rachel’s Challenge for students , M&T Bank sponsored a community event for students, their families, and neighborhood residents in the evenings.

Bullying is a nationwide problem that impacts students of all ages, and research shows it can have a severely detrimental impact on learning and development. According to the National Center for School Engagement, 160,000 students skip school each day due to their fear of being bullied. Similarly 70.6 percent of young people report having seen bullying in their schools. However, bullying stops within 10 seconds when an onlooker intercedes 57 percent of the time.

The partnership is made possible by M&T Bank, the event’s sponsor. “Rachel’s legacy and her nonprofit has made a difference at thousands of schools, and M&T Bank is very proud to bring such an important charity to work with First Philadelphia, a school that has helped so many students reach academic excellence,” says Cassandra Bell, regional charitable coordinator for M&T Bank’s Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region.
